Pound (lb)
Definition
A pound (lb) is a unit of mass used in the US customary
and British imperial systems, defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
History
The pound traces back to the Roman "libra," which is why its abbreviation
is lb. Different types of pounds existed historically, but the
avoirdupois pound became the standard.
Use
Widely used in the United States and some other countries for measuring
body weight, food, and other everyday items.
Ounce (oz)
Definition
An ounce (oz) is equal to 1/16 of a pound,
or exactly 28.3495 grams.
History
Derived from the Latin word uncia, meaning "one-twelfth," the
ounce historically varied in size before being standardized.
Use
Used to measure smaller weights such as food portions, ingredients,
postage, and precious metals.
